Scripps in NYC: Take a bite out of your Big Apple

“I want to network and experience New York. I want an opportunity to see New York’s strategic communication industry firsthand, like the billboards in Times Square.”

That is what I said in the second paragraph of my application essay for the Scripps in NYC program. It is so funny to look back on experiences and realize that you can get exactly what you set your mind too. Being a part of the first Scripps in NYC program cohort, there are still a few kinks to work out. However, being its first real trial run, it did exceptionally well.

We got to go on numerous experiences, including the Today Show, The View, Chicago on Broadway, and visit media outlets Business Insider, Audacy media group, Google and Dow Jones. We were lucky that an alum networking event was held in NYC for us, who were interested in living in the Big Apple, to be introduced to our very kind and welcoming Bobcats, who embraced us with open arms.

We truly saw the many different directions that our careers can take us, many currently thriving in fields that have nothing to do with their initial interests. We were exposed to the idea of “just go for it,” even if you don’t have all the skills in the moment, even if you never thought of it as an option; take a chance. Someone will take a chance on you.

This was my first time in New York, and it was as amazing as I imagined. I will say, the big city is big, but it isn't as big as I thought it would be. It was my trial run to see if it was the place that I wanted to land after graduating. While I can't say that it is definitely going to be New York, as I don't know where my career will take me, I do like the big-city atmosphere.

I had so much fun in the city, even though I think there was permanent damage to my feet from walking so much.

New York inspired me to make a new investment in better walking shoes.

While in NYC, we all created our own social media projects. I created an Instagram highlight that memorialized my trip.
