The Post Athens

I am a member of The Post, Ohio University's student-run newspaper, and have been involved with the organization for three years. I began as a entertainment writer and later served as Assistant Entertainment Editor before being selected as Community Standards Editor for the 2026-2027 academic year. Throughout my time at The Post, I have gained extensive experience as an entertainment journalist, covering topics ranging from film, television and music to broader conversations about media, culture and representation. Reporting on these subjects has strengthened my interviewing, research, feature writing and critical analysis skills while allowing me to build a diverse portfolio of work.

My experience as Assistant Entertainment Editor allowed me to develop leadership and mentorship skills by helping writers improve their reporting, storytelling and AP Style knowledge. I reviewed pitches, edited drafts and worked closely with writers to help them strengthen their voices and produce high-quality journalism. Through this role, I learned that editing extends beyond correcting grammar and style errors; it involves helping writers become more confident, thoughtful and effective communicators.

For the upcoming school year, I will serve as The Post's Community Standards Editor, a position that carries significant responsibility within the newsroom. As Community Standards Editor, I act as a checkpoint for ethical and responsible reporting. My role is to ensure that stories meet professional journalistic standards and align with the newspaper's commitment to accuracy, fairness, transparency and accountability. This includes reviewing content for ethical concerns, discussing complex reporting decisions with editors and writers, and helping the newsroom navigate difficult questions related to sourcing, representation, privacy and harm reduction. The position requires a deep understanding of journalistic ethics and a willingness to advocate for responsible reporting practices, even when those conversations are challenging.

I was excited to move into leadership because of the impact The Post has had on my own growth as a journalist. Over the past three years, I have learned invaluable lessons about reporting, editing, newsroom collaboration and media ethics. The mentorship I received from editors helped shape me into the journalist I am today, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to that same culture of learning and accountability for future members. Helping fellow journalists improve their work while upholding the integrity of our publication is both a privilege and a responsibility that I take seriously.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience has been building relationships with fellow editors, writers and members of the executive board. These connections have strengthened my collaboration and communication skills while providing a support system of peers who are equally passionate about journalism. Working closely with other student leaders has shown me the importance of teamwork, trust and open communication in producing meaningful and impactful reporting.

My experience with The Post has shaped both my professional development and my understanding of leadership. Through writing, editing and now serving as Community Standards Editor, I have learned that strong journalism requires not only technical skill but also ethical judgment, empathy and accountability. I have also learned that I am capable of balancing leadership responsibilities with my personal well-being, something I have often struggled with in the past. This experience has given me confidence in my ability to lead, mentor others and contribute to a newsroom culture that values both excellence and integrity.
